6. Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship

A way of achieving a qualification alongside work meaning you can study, be paid and gain skills in your chosen profession at the same time. At least 20% of your time will be spent in training/studying and the rest working. There are seven levels of apprenticeships, and these can be from one to five years long.

Degree Apprenticeships

A way of receiving a university degree whilst working for an employer meaning you both are working and learning in your chosen profession. Usually, your tuition fees are paid for you and you will also receive a salary.

Higher Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship which achieves a qualification of Level 4 and can which vary from 1-5 years long.

Portfolio

Developed throughout your programme or as part of an end assessment, a portfolio is a way to showcase and evidence your training and work.

Training provider

An apprentice training provider works with colleges, independent companies and employers to make sure apprenticeships offer the best training and students achieve qualifications which meet national standards.

NVQ

There are five levels of National Vocational Qualifications and they are a way of achieving qualifications in work place vocations, often being assessed practically and through coursework, not exams.
